Ganglion Cysts
Ganglion Cysts can occur at any age. They are small, balloon-like structures that arise from a joint or tendon sheath and are filled with a gel-like fluid. Most commonly on a wrist, or at the base of a finger, they are usually small (one inch or less in size).
Causes may be falls, blows to the wrist or penetrating injuries. Conservative treatments range from doing nothing to aspiration by removing the fluid under a local anesthetic.
Some small groups of patients require surgical excision of ganglion cysts. To lessen the chance of recurrence, it may be necessary to remove the base of the ganglion from inside the wrist joints.
